How to use more than two monitors with Windows Vista

<< Back to overview / Zurück zur Übersicht

The problem: The driver model changed from Windows XP to Windows Vista. With Windows XP it was possible to use more than one video driver. With Windows Vista this isn't possible anymore. If you install more than one video-driver in Vista, one will work, the other will always be disabled.
The solutions:
  • Install a video-card with more than two monitor ports (expensive!)
  • OR
  • Install two video-cards which use the same driver.
The second option is easy today, because most drivers supports a wide range of video-cards of the same manufacturer. E.g. the GeForce-driver of NVidia supports the GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, and 200-series desktop GPUs.
Tip!
If you have only one PCIe-16x-slot: you can install a PCIe-16x-card in a PCIe-4x-slot if your 4x-slot doesn't has a bracket at the end. At least it worked with my NVidia 7300 LE.
The card will be slightly slower in a 4x-slot, but I use the 7300LE only in desktop mode, so this is no real drawback.
